Why do bright, intelligent young people,
who have everything going for them, embark upon a journey
of self-destruction? Why do they purposely hurt the people
who love them most?
Your childs destructive behaviors
are most likely symptoms of an underlying issue, disorder,
addiction, or trauma. Rather than address the symptom it is
extremely important that the core issue is identified and
managed. Wiping your nose doesn't make your cold go away.
It's merely a temporary fix until you must grab for another
tissue.
Many kids behave the way they
do because of payoffs. It may be difficult to see any positive
payoff that your child may derive from their destructive behaviors
but an understanding of the core issue can clarify the reasons
for specific behaviors.
Once the core issue has been
identified then the appropriate steps can be taken to find
your child and family the help that will address the the underlying
issue.
Children with certain behavior disorders
are cognitively incapable of comprehending the consequences
that may occur from an action. The correct intervention can
help a child manage his behavior in a positive way.
Low self esteem is a core issue
behind many negative behaviors. Re-establishing a healthy
self-image is vital to long term positive performance. Be
sure that whatever intervention that you do choose instills
life long positive change by dealing with the core issues.
Many parents choose to pursue
interventions that address the symptoms only. Attacking the
symptoms will drive the destructive behaviors underground
- to resurface at a later date. This approach wastes valuable
time and resources and may even make things worse.

Who is considered a Troubled Teen?
Troubled teens are adolescents that have no respect for authority and mainly disrespect their parents. They do not care about society or their families. They do not feel any responsibility towards their parent. Adolescence is a point of life where the world no longer seems large, in fact some people who were once large are now quite small, and teens no longer respond to threats the way they may have as small children. |

How do I know if my teen needs help?
As a parent you can test the severity of a teen issue if you feel your teen is troubled. Simply check the reaction of your child when you justifiably say no to something you don't agree with that they would like to do. Most typical troubled teens will respond with defiance, anger, manipulation, or tantrums. If this is the case, you may want to take action in looking for schools for troubled teens that can help your child. |
